Thanks to everyone who weighed in on the theme survey! Based on those results, here's how we're going to proceed with "alternate realities":

Broadly speaking, an alternate reality for theme purposes is a reality accessible to multiple people (whether by physical travel or mentally through technology) that can be traveled in and out of.

kinds of alternate realities that count under the theme
- parallel Earths or alternate timeline worlds/universes that can be traveled to
- any other physical realities/universes outside of our own that can be traveled to through portals or other means, including fictional worlds, fantasy realms, etc.
- shared virtual, digital, and other non-physical worlds that can be entered by multiple people through technology*

kinds of alternate realities that do not count under the theme
- purely psychological/mental realities that cannot be traveled to by other people by technology
- sources that take place in one reality, but the characters aren't sure what is real

To give some examples around the borderline: Inception counts under these rules because dreamsharing is an artificially created world that can be traveled in and out of by a number of people; Shutter Island and Sucker Punch do not count because they are not technologically accessible realities that can be traveled to by other people.

* We realize there are likely SFF sources out there that blur the borders of this one; we'll consider them on a case by case basis.

One point of clarification on the time travel aspect of the theme: to count as time travel, there must be instantaneous time displacement involved. If a character from the past got to the present day by being alive the whole time, or being frozen, or being cloned from DNA, for the purposes of the theme, these do not constitute time travel.

(We're all traveling in time! Right now, you just traveled a few seconds reading this! But for the theme, we specifically mean instantaneous travel from one point in time to another, different, non-continuous point in time.)

These theme clarifications may exclude some sources people were interested in, but "alternate reality" has proved to be such a broad field that we need to draw a line on it somewhere, so based on feedback we're defining it this way to hopefully make things clearer and give some limits to the theme.
